March/April, 2016 Minutes
Happy Easter & Spring
53+ Quilts of Valor bordered out, ready to begin quilting!
4 QOVs Awarded in March, 9 QOVs Awarded in May so far - 3 more scheduled

Because our February, 2016 monthly meeting needed to be cancelled due to increment weather, we had quite a bit of catching up to do at our March/April East Central ILQOV meeting, including the awarding of a Quilt of Valor to one of the McDonald's employees, who happens to be a Korean Veteran.

During our December, 2015 Christmas party/monthly meeting - one of the McDonald's employees walked by our table and stopped to admire one of our Quilts of Valor quilt tops we were showing during our show and share.  Our Doris and I knew immediately, we would soon be awarding this gorgeous QOV to this much deserving Veteran.

Korean Veteran/McDonald's employee, Peggy H. awarded her Quilt of Valor
Miss Betty & I were also able to get a Quilt of Valor finished up for our Doris.  She had requested one of her very special QOVs be completed for one of her family members, who proudly served in the Army for 38+ years!

Doris's QOV for her family's Vietnam Veteran - soon to be awarded!

UPDATE:  this Quilt of Valor has been Awarded by Doris...Thanks, Doris!

We have several/MANY Quilts of Valor Awards scheduled in the upcoming months, along w/many QOVs to finish up.  If you would like to assist us in volunteering in longarm quilting one or some of Quilt of Valor quilt tops, binding, creating QOV Presentations cases, embroidering East Central IL QOV quilt labels and/or attaching, Please contact us...Thank YOU!

Vietnam Veterans Awarded their Quilts of Valor

Santa came early this year to our December, 2015 East Central IL QOV meeting - he sent one of his Quilt Of Valor elves:

SIX (6) Quilts of Valor quilt tops from guess who...?

None other than our Strip Quilting Diva...Doris!

One of Santa's favorite QOV Elves and especially ours ;-)

Let's take a closer look at just what our Doris has been up to since we last got to see her in September, shall we?

Another wonderful 'original' design by our Doris - Love it!

This picture does not do this QOV quilt top justice - there are some really neat Military fabrics in the sashings of this quilt and amongst the blocks in a camo green print.
Do you see a flag block?

What an eye-catching patriotic Quilt of Valor top!

A neat collage of patriotic fabrics and prints - should look amazing bordered out!

This QOV may get awarded to a Veteran Doris & I had the privilege of meeting today
who admired ALL the Quilts of Valor we were sharing

#6 is a compilation of Doris's dedication to the creation of
comforting and healing Quilts of Valor for those touched by war,
and her amazing eye for color and original design

These and sooo many others that Doris has generously volunteered to create this past year, will border out wonderfully well and once quilted, be awarded to deserving Service Members and Veterans throughout our East Central Illinois area, along with battlefield warriors and those who escort our fallen heroes to their final resting place.

A huge, BIG Thank YOU goes out to our Doris, and ANYONE who creates Quilts of Valor like her. Because of QOV Volunteers like Doris, so many deserving Service Members and Veterans will soon be covered with a stunning Quilt of Valor and honored for their service and sacrifice for our country.

Merry Christmas, EVERYONE and Thank YOU for a Wonderful Quilts of Valor year!

November, 2015 Minutes
Happy Veterans Day and Happy Thanksgiving!
5 QOV quilt tops completed, one special Quilt of Valor prepared and shipped
ONLY 4 Quilts of Valor left to complete to reach our 2015 Goal!
17 Quilts of Valor Awarded in November, 10 scheduled to be Awarded in December

Thank goodness for our QOVF Volunteers - especially our Sue!  She stepped up and awarded WW II Veteran, Gene his Quilt of Valor after yours truly got sick and lost her voice...Thank YOU, Sue!

WW II Veteran, Gene being awarded his Quilt of Valor by Volunteer Sue w/ Gene's wife and friend/Teacher
Sue shared with me following this QOV Award Ceremony at the Brand-NEW Martinsville school, that the Veteran's Day Ceremony the entire school district created to honor our area Veterans was absolutely outstanding!  Thank YOU, Martinsville, IL for honoring our Veterans.

Recently, we received Quilts of Valor pictures from one of our very favorite people, Clairellen of those Quirky Quilters in Michigan:

Four Quilts of Valor awarded to 4 very deserving Veterans by Irene P.

Clairellen included in her note to us:

Irene P. shared:  "On Thanksgiving I presented 4 quilts to veterans in Ohio. On the far left is a young man who is in the Army reserves and now is an Honored Guard and presides at funerals for the military. His quilt was made by Suzanne Steffes.

On his right is a veteran of the Air Force and served stateside handling projects affecting the Vietnam war. His quilt was made by Irene Palmerquilted by DebLindley.

The next vet to the right was stationed stateside in the Air Force and is a brother to the first recipient. His quilt was made by Diane Reeve and quilted by Kelly Ziccarello.

The veteran on the far right was in the Korean War His quilt was made by Irene Palmer and quilted by Marcia Hawks.

Presentations are always very moving and tears of joy are shared by everyone. What an honor it is to be able to be a part of of every step in the whole process. Every recipient is very grateful for being remembered and thanked for their service. The gentleman on the far right said that this was the first time he had been shown appreciation for his service since he came home from his time in the service.

They all agreed how much they appreciate the honor of receiving such a gift of appreciation. This reaction and comment is very common to hear from all of our veterans and soldiers, I have found. How sad, but it is such an honor to express that to all of our military at this time in their lives on the organizations behalf and on behalf of the quilt piecers and quilters."

"Four Quilts of Valor were presented to very deserving veterans by Irene Palmer, representing the Quirky Quilters Quilt Guild in Oscoda Michigan.  Thank you gentlemen for your service."

Thank YOUClairellen, Irene and all those Quirky Quilters for EVERYTHING you do to honor and comfort our Service Members and Veterans with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.  We were privileged to play a small part in your wonderful Quilts of Valor Award Ceremony.

One of our very favorite QOVF Volunteers, a definitive reason we continue to produce one-of-a-kind Quilts of Valor, and one of our closely guarded secrets until now...meet Doris.  We taught Doris how to create Quilts of Valor last September, 2014 at one of our very first East Central IL QOV Sew-INs. Since then, as of July 13, 2015, Doris has created 39 Quilts of Valor quilt tops and counting!

Meet Doris: One of East Central IL QOV 'Secret Weapons'
We LOVE Doris and anyone who looks or acts like her ;-)  As a reward for her unwavering Quilts of Valor efforts, we took Doris shopping at Lori's Pins and Needles.  Of course, she picked out more beautiful fabrics to create even more Quilts of Valor quilt tops.  Thank YOU, Doris - you are truly very special, indeed!

In addition to Doris's eight (8) QOV quilt tops, we received three others we are making final border decisions for.  Here are a couple we are currently working with while we wait for additional fabrics to arrive:

This QOV quilt top will get two additional borders to ensure it is the correct finished size

And this gorgeous QOV quilt top will receive three additional borders

8 QOVs scheduled to be awarded in May

A last minute scheduling conflict resulted in a 'quick change of place' and a FUN-filled Marshall McDonald's QOV Sew-IN Meeting.  Almost everyone showed up, including one of our NEW Members, Cindy, with some gorgeous Quilts of Valor, and the infamous MODA Quilt of Valor Competition quilt 'Miss Betty & I' collaborated with - it is sooo gorgeous!!

Cindy's MODA Competition Quilt - the photos don't do it justice!

I enjoyed getting to see this gorgeous Quilt of Valor of Cindy's again, and our fellow East Central IL QOV members enjoyed seeing it for the first time, too.  Cindy also brought another QOV quilt top - the Lady Liberty, that we will soon enjoy the privilege of quilting:

April, 2015 Minutes
Happy Spring!
10 QOV quilt tops complete, ready for borders & binding, ONLY 2 remaining to reach our June, 2015 goals!
6 QOVs scheduled to be awarded in April

Our regularly scheduled April meeting had to be cancelled due to local flash flooding and severe weather threats.  Living in the MidWest, we've grown used to these explosive weather situations that seem to pop-up out of nowhere and have learned to keep our 'eyes on the skies' and tuned in to our local weather channel!  We ALL said more than a few prayers for our fellow Illinoisans north of us who, unfortunately, received far more devastation and destruction than we did.  We will continue to keep them in our prayers as they climb out and re-build their local communities.

Illinois tornado - April 9, 2015

Because we were spared the effects of the brunt of the severe storms and tornadoes, thankfully our Group of dedicated sewers and quilters were able to stay on task.  I heard back from several of you relaying your completion of TEN new Quilt of Valor quilt tops, more than 7 are in various stages of being bound, and two are headed to Texas to be longarmed by a recent QOV Volunteer, Thank YOU!

Here is a pile of our most recent quilts ready to be bound:

5 QOV quilt tops bound on one side
Getting ready to sew the second side down:

First side of binding sewn, all pinned down ready to sew down to the front side

And the second side getting all sewn down:

As you may know, recently we've had a very special Quilts of Valor request for Vietnam Veterans from our area who will be attending a reunion of their Infantry Division this fall, which of course we've agreed to honor.  You may read all about it here: http://eastcentralilqov.blogspot.com/2015/04/we-have-just-received-very-special.html

We also have several Quilts of Valor Award ceremonies coming up in the next few months, including over the Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and Father's Day weekends.  Stay tuned for future blog postings and updates.

Thanks again to Everyone for ALL your amazing talents, gifts, and especially your unending generosity in helping us honor and cover our Service Members and Veterans with Quilts of Valor.

Our March meeting brought us a nice Spring Day...FINALLY!  I think we're ALL tired of scooping and shoveling snow - at least I know I am!!

I gently asked Doris for 3 (three) QOV tops in February to possibly be done by March - she brought 4 (FOUR) and they're ALL different!  She's really starting to branch out, now.

Aren't these neat?  And perfectly pieced, too I might add.

Check these out:

LOVE these two - can hardly wait to add borders!
I asked Doris IF it was really true that she had NEVER sewn a quilt top prior to sewing her first Quilt of Valor top last fall and she said that, "Yes, that is correct."  However, she admitted she has sewn most of her life - dressmaking and such and...it shows...Thank YOU, Doris - you are a Godsend! Prayers really do get answered, don't they?

We've decided that since Doris has contributed soooo much over the last few months, including fabrics and threads and needles and cutting tools and...the list is endless as most of you Quilting Divas know, we're going to let Doris have first dibs on one of our QOV collection boxes - the one at Lori's Pins 'n Needles in Paris, IL.

So - if you're in the area, Please drop by Lori's and visit a spell, she has LOTS of neat fabrics and exciting NEW Spring lines w/patterns and new machines and...our East Central IL QOV collection box is right up near the counter - we'll have Doris make up her 'Wish List' and whatever 'we' can all come up with, Doris will get first dibs...Hope to See You ALL at Lori's ;-)

Thanks goes to EVERYONE - you are ALL phenomenal!

February, 2015 Minutes
Happy Valentines!
13 QOV quilt tops complete, ready for borders & binding, ONLY 17 remaining!
Six QOVs scheduled to be awarded in February

What a February Sew-In Meeting we had!  If you weren't there then you missed it!  First, our energizer bunny, Doris brought it - SIX (6) Quilts of Valor, in fact...

This is what a stack of SIX (6) QOV quilt tops looks like
We've decided that Doris will now be referred to as our 'Strip Quilting Diva' ;-)  IF my numbers are correct, this Diva has created a Baker's Dozen (13) QOV tops since October!  Thank YOU, Doris!

Seven total in this photo - five are folded in the background
Just since National Sew Day, the QOV tops just keep coming!

National Sew Day completions we brought for 'Show & Share'
Valued Member, Jackie - shared a story about another Quilt of Valor that will be getting donated to us AFTER it is submitted in a QOV contest by MODA for judging, once yours truly gets it quilted! We should receive the top next week - we'll keep you posted in upcoming blog postings.

And our Brand-NEW East Central IL QOV Mascot made his debut:

He'll be in charge of QOVF Volunteer Memberships, haven't named him yet - Names?
along w/overseeing our QOV quilt patterns & CC 4-H QOV SPIN Club Binder
East Central IL QOV quilt pattern binder

We established our Brand-New Block & Top Program that will take NEW Members and beginning quilters through our Standards of Excellence quilting procedures:

QOV quilt block kits

QOV quilt top kits
We also discussed last year's fundraising efforts - where we ended, where we are now, and what we most need to focus on.  Our year-end totals were shared, including Quilts of Valor nominations and awards.  Much of this information has been posted in the Files section of our East Central IL QOV Facebook Group.

Later, decided to stop by Lori's Pins 'n Needles in Paris and check on our donation box they so generously allowed us to display, and just see IF we had enough to help get a bolt of white muslin to help out with our strip pieced Quilts of Valor:

Looks pretty good!
Once we added to the current donations, we were able to purchase a much needed bolt...Thanks, Lori! For now, time to start adding more borders to ALL those QOV's of Doris's and get busy quilting ;-)

Thank You to EVERYONE for all your hard work and efforts - what an amazing bunch you all are!!

Every month, this incredible group of Volunteers continue to 'Bring It', and December was NO exception!  They ALL came packin' amazing quilt tops destined to become gorgeous Quilts of Valor.

Pea's wonderful Quilt of Valor top - love the gold picture frame trim, Thanks, 'P'!
Sue took some of our signature blocks last month, added some fabric out of her stash and made a great quilt:

We're thinking a final red border may just finish this top out...

Our over-achiever, Doris brought 3 finished tops and was the winner of our Christmas centerpiece - CONGRATS Doris!

Doris brought back 3!
Another view of her three:

Close-up of Doris's 3 - aren't these neat?!
And Jackie shared her very first strip-pieced quilt top:

Jackie w/first quilt top - Yeah for Jackie, great job!
I see a Quilt of Valor in Jackie's very near future ;-)

We had sooo much fun talking and sharing and listening to Christmas music while munching on holiday treats...forgot to take more pics!  We promise more in the New Year.

We even got to meet one of our newest members, 92 years young, whose still driving and making quilt tops. Her father was a WW I Veteran, (yes, that is Worl War ONE), her husband was a WW II Veteran, and one of her sons served in Vietnam!  She wants to create quilts that are useful and have a purpose...I think we can accommodate her wish, don't you?  We made a group decision that ANYONE 90+ years young, gets their QOVF Volunteer Membership fee comped by the group!  She left w/QOVF 2015 Volunteer Membership pin, planning on wearing it everywhere but the shower ;-) Welcome, Miss June.  Looking forward to seeing your first Quilt of Valor.

Packed up the 4-H Quilts of Valor:

Letter to the QOV Recipient
Quilt of Valor Award Certificate
Shipping Label
Packing up ALL three 4-H Quilts of Valor
Had to wait for a shipping box big enough to fit ALL three 4-H QOVs in the same box - just didn't feel right to split them...so glad it arrived just in time for shipping, they all fit perfectly!

They LOVED the photo I shared of the recently revealed QOVF booth...what's not to Love?

Recently revealed Brand-NEW QOV booth
Everyone left w/fabrics and strips to create even more quilt tops - and they were a little disappointed I hadn't brought even more kits for them!  I thought I was being nice by giving them a break over the holidays.  They were having NONE of it, and yours truly needs to get busy cutting and kitting up even more!  Julia - where are you?  (I think she may be a snowbird for now, already missing ALL her cutting abilities)...time to get back to it!

Thanks goes to this amazing East Central IL QOV Group for surpassing even my wildest dreams of what could be possible in 2014 - can hardly wait to see what they'll do in the New Year!!

Merry Christmas EVERYONE!

September, 2014 Monthly Minutes w/Updates:
14 Current Members - 2 NEW Members...Welcome!
2 QOVs completed = 47 remaining

On September 11, 2014, at approximately 10:00 am (CST), our second East Central Illinois Quilts of Valor® Group meeting commenced.  First we shared photos of a recent Quilts of Valor Award to a local WW II Naval Veteran, and gave a very deserving mention about the Casey, IL Industrial Arts class, which has generously volunteered to donate 25 quilt racks for the Casey, IL Veterans, who will ultimately receive a Quilt of Valor over the next 14 months...Thank YOU, Mr. Groothuis for your generosity!  Of course, we will now need to get busy in Casey making ALL those Quilts of Valor to honor our deserving Service Members and Veterans, won't we, Casey?

Next, a lively discussion ensued regarding our brand-new Quilts of Valor Membership program that was introduced at our previous August, 2014 meeting – our Executive Director has posted a wonderful and concise explanation about our Registered Trademark, it’s approved and authorized usage, along w/additional details about our new QOVF Membership model: http://eastcentralilqov.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-letter-from-our-executive-director_12.html

Then we got busy cutting our Valor fabrics for QOVs. We showed one of our new attendees our rotary cutter and how to cut our fabric strips.  She was a real quick learner.  This QOV cutting TEAM cut fifty (50) Patriotic Valor strip units in no time!  (That's a total of 150+ fabric strips!!)

Our QOV cutting TEAM ;-)
These strip units will be sewn into Patriotic Stripes Signature blocks like these:

Patriotic Stripe Signature Blocks
Upon completion, these Patriotic stripe units will be sewn into block units like these:

And if cutting wasn't enough - Doris got busy sewing:

Sewing away on those fabric strips she just finished cutting...Thanks, Doris!
BIG Thanks also go to Jackie and Shirley for each taking home twenty (20) fabric strip units to sew up just in time for the upcoming MQX Midwest Quilt Festival in Springfield, IL, September 24 - 27, 2014 AND Illinois Quilts of Valor has a booth...See YOU There!
