Latest Patriotic/Military Mystery has just Launched! w/Updates...

We've participated in the past and Alycia, our fearless Leader and wonderful Patriotic/Military Mystery creator, runs a wonderful Mystery.  We just didn't know IF we'd have time this busy Fall/harvest time of the year!  But after reading our first Mystery Clue, which includes patriotic scrappy fabrics as an option...We're IN!!

Fabric Scraps from recent Quilts of Valor - I think we have enough at least to get started, don't you?

2 baskets stuffed FULL of patriotic fabric leftovers from recent QOVs

Here's a pic of the last Patriotic/Military Mystery quilt.  We added a Big RED border, since 'Miss Betty' & I enjoy quilting those nice, luscious borders ;-)

It's from my stash and it's dated 2014 - STILL stunning!  We're giving serious consideration to using some of these star blocks in our QOV Panel Challenge that we're halfway through.  We'll see how they come out, prior to making final decisions.  And several will be sent on to Carol of the QOV Stars Group for their latest Veteran's Day block drive.  Membership is OPEN to anyone.

We'll post pics and updates, once we get some Star blocks created!

Just received these beautifully illustrated, historically rich books through amazon.com - written by our QOVF President of the Board of Directors, Sue Reich.

Beautifully illustrated, historically engaging and enlightening

If you have an interest in the rich histories behind quilts and quilting, I urge you to check these out - especially her latest book, "QUILTS Presidential And Patriotic", by Sue Reich.  It is a stunningly refreshing piece of work steeped in our country's rich heritage; including how some of the latest trends in quilting, along with our ancestors' quilts, have each played integral roles in our country's history, especially during politically charged Presidential times - an engaging and enlightening read!

Time to finish those QOV Star Blocks...

The QOV Panel Challenge Continues...

You may remember - we originally started this QOV Panel Challenge on September 4, 2016 and immediately started plotting and planning.  We chose our patriotic fabrics and Star blocks carefully, and while designing, decided to embroider some patriotic blocks, similar to what we did with The Flight of the Eagle last year.

Here's what we have so far:

Americana Liberty Bell

Star/Flags block

Heart/Flags block

And the final block - the Eagle block, still in progress:

Eagle embroidery in progress

Eagle embroidery motif stats:

  • 17 color changes
  • 54,740 total stitches
  • Stitch-out time - roughly 4 hours
  • Eagle Embroidery fabric - Northcott's Stonehenge Stars and Stripes
  • ALL patriotic embroidery motifs originate from the Americana Collection by Anita Goodesign
Each embroidery block has taken between 3 - 4 hours to stitch-out on my vintage embroidery machine.  Chose to include four (4) total embroidery blocks in our QOV Panel Challenge quilt, and we're on the fourth one ;-)

We'll post a pic w/updates when this block is complete!

UPDATE: 3 hours, 23 min. later...the Eagle block is finished!

The Eagle block - finished!
And didn't it turn out Amazing?!

Also got another QOV ready to quilt and will begin quilting as soon as we finish up our embroidery blocks and our latest bout of 'surprise' thunderstorms blow through:

QOV Stars Group - Quilt of Valor
Our East Central IL QOV Group was chosen to receive this QOV quilt top.  We offered to quilt it, and added the two exterior borders to accommodate the BIGGER than life Vet it is destined to be awarded to.

Thanks goes to Carol of the QOV Stars Group for ALL she and her incredible volunteers have done and continue to do, to honor and cover our Service Members and Veterans with Quilts of Valor.

New QOV Eagle Panel Challenge Begins!

Just received this gorgeous Northcott Eagle Panel from Carol of the QOV Stars Group:

Let the Quilts of Valor Panel Challenge Begin!

So far, pulled several coordinating Northcott fabrics and a few other patriotic fabrics - ALL from my own personal stash, looks like I won't need to purchase another thing!  They all seem to be playing together nicely, too ;-).

Giving serious consideration to adding some embroidered blocks to this Quilt of Valor, which could be awarded to a Vietnam Veteran pilot, who is also a Purple Heart recipient - will have to do some checking w/Carol to see IF this could be an option.

Our East Central IL QOV group awarded a similar Quilt of Valor, the Flight of the Eagle, to my cousin, who was a Vietnam Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.  As a result of that QOV Award, we recently received this Quilt of Valor nomination.

Time to select just the right eagle embroideries and bordering fabrics.  Will post updates of the progress...Stay tuned!
