Marshall Library Hosting East Central IL Quilts of Valor

Recently, East Central IL QOV was invited by our Marshall, IL Public Library to create and display Quilts of Valor in honor of our Veterans and Service Members throughout our East Central Illinois area during the month of May - Military Appreciation Month.  We were more than pleased to accept this wonderful honor.  Our Group got busy and this is what we came up with:

Tribute QOV created to honor my dear FIL, Dick
a WW II Vet who served and fought at Iwo Jima

This Tribute quilt was not only created entirely of reproduction Civil War fabrics w/military embroideries throughout, it is also one of the very first QOV Mysteries of Alycia's we had ever been involved with, and is a fine representation of "yesterday's quilting".

Because we are displaying in the Teen Center of our local library, and at the suggestion of our Library Director, Alyson, we also included a theme, "Yesterday/Today", which expounds in detail by demonstrating with vintage and today's sewing artifacts; how quilts were created in yesterday's world, and just how far we've come with today's neat sewing and quilting goodies.

We incorporated sewing/quilting tools and notions, books & quilting magazines, threads, fabrics & quilt blocks, and even sewing machines - including a couple from my vintage sewing machine collection, the Singer 15-91 w/Bentwood case and one of my favorite Singer Featherweights.  Each machine sports a spool of Aurifil's Quilted in Honor thread in patriotic colors, and a signed QOV quilt block - one of the blocks even contains a signature w/well wishes from the Marianne Fons!

The next Quilt of Valor we chose to include in this display was created by another of our Valued Group's Members, Cynthia.  Cynthia created this wonderful QOV for the Moda Piece and Comfort Challenge, and requested Miss Betty & I quilt it in time for the competition and judging, which we were happy to do, in exchange for the honor to award it to one of our area Veterans in our East Central IL area, which Cynthia generously agreed to.

This gorgeous Quilt of Valor, created entirely out of Moda's Because of the Brave fabric line, is also an original quilt design by Cynthia w/fussy cutting throughout to enhance the amazing design elements of these fabrics, and is one of many that will be awarded during our 2016 Veteran's Day Tribute:

Cynthia's Because of the Brave Quilt of Valor -
to be awarded to an area Veteran during our 2016 Veteran's Day Celebration

The third Quilt of Valor we chose is another of Alycia's QOV Mysteries, Stars A Waving:

Alycia's QOV Mystery - Stars A Waving,
will also be awarded during our 2016 Veteran's Day Tribute

This stunning Stars A Waving Quilt of Valor display represents quilting of today - complete with our East Central IL QOV mascot, along with today's yummy fabrics, FUN sewing notions and tools, and one of Singer's latest heavy duty sewing machines, created specifically for 'us quilters' in mind, and one we use for our 4-H youth.

This Quilt of Valor exhibit wouldn't/couldn't have possibly come together without the invaluable help and assistance from 'our Doris' - who is recovering nicely from her recent shoulder surgery and even able to drive, hoping to return to one of her favorite hobbies - creating Quilts of Valor quilt tops for our area Veterans...Thank YOU, Doris!

The Dynamic Duo just finishing up!

This Quilt of Valor display is now available for immediate viewing throughout the ENTIRE month of May, 2016, at our Marshall, IL Public Library.  We encourage you to stop by to enjoy, and join us in honoring our East Central IL area Service Members and Veterans...Thank You.

UPDATE 5/04/2016:  We made the Arts & Culture Section of the TH Tribune Star!
