Pearl Harbor - Today Marks the 75th Anniversary of that Fateful Day that Lives in Infamy

We pay tribute to those who's life was suddenly and tragically taken on that fateful day on December 7, 1941, and honor those who survived and fought to defend our country.

We join in Honoring the Pearl Harbor Veteran Survivors during their 75th Anniversary through Quilts of Valor

Our East Central IL QOV Group recently volunteered to assist in finishing a QOV quilt top originally created by the Quilts of Valor Stars Group, by adding a border, quilting/binding/labeling and shipping the completed Quilt of Valor to assist one of our fellow Group Leaders, Laura from Texas.

Laura will soon be travelling to Hawaii with her husband, to celebrate their wedding anniversary and while there, to also join in part of the ceremonies honoring those Pearl Harbor/WW II Veterans, including awarding several of those survivors from ALL over the United States, Quilts of Valor.

This stunning Quilt of Valor quilt top recently quilted and coming off the frame:

Once quilted, it's time for binding:

Labels attached, ready to ship:

All ready to ship!

We included our personal letter to our QOV Award Recipient - in this case, a WW II Veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, and Thanked them for their Sacrifice and Service to our Country.

It's been quilted and shipped.  Let's hope and pray it arrives safe & sound and just in time to accompany Laura to Pearl Harbor for the 75th Anniversary!

Safe Trip, Laura...

Thankful for our Service Members and Veterans - QOVs that will soon Honor Them...

As our Thanksgiving Holiday fast approaches, we are reminded once again, of ALL we have to be thankful for - including our Service Members and Veterans who continue to sacrifice for those of us who remain with our families and friends, while our freedoms are being protected and defended.

Thank You to ALL our Service Members and Veterans, and their families, for the sacrifices they continue to make for ours.

To show our eternal thanks, we diligently continue to create Quilts of Valor to honor those who serve and sacrifice for our country.  The following are our latest QOV quilt top finishes - ready to be quilted and ultimately awarded to a Service Member or Veteran:

Veteran's Star Challenge
This patriotic quilt top was a challenge by the Quilts of Valor Stars Group to create the Patriotic Star blocks and turn into a unique QOV.  We think we accomplished that goal - we even included some patriotic embroidery blocks to go with:

Rockets RED Glare embroidery block

QOV Panel Challenge

Our latest two Patriotic Mystery quilt tops that will soon be quilted into Quilts of Valor:

Patriotic Mystery #1 - soon to be quilted into a QOV

And the second - the same Patriotic Mystery with a twist:

Mystery #2 - our version on this neat Patriotic Mystery

We were honored to be asked to quilt the following two Quilts of Valor for a fellow East Central IL QOV Group Leader.  Such wonderfully created QOVs, both quilted out beautifully:

Appliqued Star QOV

Eagle Flag QOV

We have one amazing QOV left to quilt for this talented group of quilters.  Once it's complete, we'll post updates w/pics to this post.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday with Family & Friends,

Our October Meeting - Doris came...;-)

And guess what our very own Strip Quilting Diva brought?  Not one, not two, NOT even three QOV quilt tops...NINE (9) Quilts of Valor quilt tops!  This is what can happen when an 80+ year young quilter can be left to her own quilty devices ;-)

Doris's NINE (9) QOV Quilt Tops!

Ready for the QOV show?  Here we go - We'll let Doris show you the first one:

Doris unfolding one of her patriotic QOV quilt tops
We really liked the patriotic fabrics she chose for this one!

And here it is in it's entirety:

How creative and colorful is this?

Next - we will unveil ALL these outstanding QOV quilt tops...Enjoy!

#2 QOV quilt top

#3 QOV quilt top

#4 QOV quilt top

#5 QOV quilt top

#6 QOV quilt top

#7 QOV quilt top

#8 QOV quilt top
And the last but certainly NOT the least these Quilts of Valor quilt top by our Doris:

QOV quilt top #9!

These pics do NOT do the fabrics in these colorful QOV quilt tops justice!  Once ALL these amazing patriotic quilt tops are bordered out - they will quilt into some really wonderful Quilts of Valor.

And IF my math is correct - this puts Doris well over the FIFTY (50) mark for her total contribution of QOV quilt tops, just since October, 2014!

A Big HUGE Thank YOU goes out to our very own Strip Quilting Diva, Doris!  Because of her Quilts of Valor efforts, nine (9) more Veterans and Service Members will be honored and covered with wonderful Quilts of Valor.

And once again - got a BIG hug from one of our previously awarded QOV recipients, Peggy...those are The Best!

Time to get busy with borders and quilting!

A4 Patriotic Mystery Underway!

Originally, had planned on utilizing the 'scrappy' option of our latest Patriotic Mystery but, while going through my personal scrap bins, stumbled across these two wonderful patriotic prints and decided to do something I NEVER do - alter a two fabric and/or scrappy Mystery into a 3+ fabrics:

Red Patriotic print/Blue Patriotic print/Parchment solid
And - using a parchment colored solid versus my usual stark white!  Shall be interesting to see how this works out ;-)

So, after the cutting:

ALL the necessary strips and squares cut - ready to sew!
On to one of my favorite parts...sewing, then pressing and MORE cutting!

Cutting the strips into Red/Parchment/Blue units

And Clue #1 of our latest A4 Mystery by Alycia is now complete!

ALL necessary units for Clue #1 complete, safely tucked away until next week...

To join in the Mystery FUN, Please follow this direct web link for ALL the Mystery details:
 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MysteryQuilts4Military/info

Now that I can put Clue #1 to bed, time to get back to sewing those Patriotic Star units I started last week.  Got a little sidetracked w/annual Fall cold with the fluctuating temps but, back at it today!

Half of the 25 block units have BOTH of their corner squares sewn on
and the other half, waiting patiently for their turn at the sewing machine...

Sewing the corner squares on the Patriotic Star units - my Dad would refer to my sewing set-up as a 'jig'...loved that term, sounds 'festive' don't you think?

GREEN painter's tape to the rescue - works great for establishing a definitive sewing line for my squares w/NO marking...Yes!  I HATE to mark - takes ALL the FUN out of sewing ;-)

Time to mow so I can sew...later.

Latest Patriotic/Military Mystery has just Launched! w/Updates...

We've participated in the past and Alycia, our fearless Leader and wonderful Patriotic/Military Mystery creator, runs a wonderful Mystery.  We just didn't know IF we'd have time this busy Fall/harvest time of the year!  But after reading our first Mystery Clue, which includes patriotic scrappy fabrics as an option...We're IN!!

Fabric Scraps from recent Quilts of Valor - I think we have enough at least to get started, don't you?

2 baskets stuffed FULL of patriotic fabric leftovers from recent QOVs

Here's a pic of the last Patriotic/Military Mystery quilt.  We added a Big RED border, since 'Miss Betty' & I enjoy quilting those nice, luscious borders ;-)

A3/Field of Stars - one of our previous Patriotic/Military Mysteries
that will soon be quilted into a gorgeous Quilt of Valor

We'll post pics and updates, once we get some Star blocks created!

Just received these beautifully illustrated, historically rich books through amazon.com - written by our QOVF President of the Board of Directors, Sue Reich.

Beautifully illustrated, historically engaging and enlightening

If you have an interest in the rich histories behind quilts and quilting, I urge you to check these out - especially her latest book, "QUILTS Presidential And Patriotic", by Sue Reich.  It is a stunningly refreshing piece of work steeped in our country's rich heritage; including how some of the latest trends in quilting, along with our ancestors' quilts, have each played integral roles in our country's history, especially during politically charged Presidential times - an engaging and enlightening read!

Time to finish those QOV Star Blocks...

The QOV Panel Challenge Continues...

You may remember - we originally started this QOV Panel Challenge on September 4, 2016 and immediately started plotting and planning.  We chose our patriotic fabrics and Star blocks carefully, and while designing, decided to embroider some patriotic blocks, similar to what we did with The Flight of the Eagle last year.

Here's what we have so far:

Americana Liberty Bell

Star/Flags block

Heart/Flags block

And the final block - the Eagle block, still in progress:

Eagle embroidery in progress

Eagle embroidery motif stats:

  • 17 color changes
  • 54,740 total stitches
  • Stitch-out time - roughly 4 hours
  • Eagle Embroidery fabric - Northcott's Stonehenge Stars and Stripes
  • ALL patriotic embroidery motifs originate from the Americana Collection by Anita Goodesign
Each embroidery block has taken between 3 - 4 hours to stitch-out on my vintage embroidery machine.  Chose to include four (4) total embroidery blocks in our QOV Panel Challenge quilt, and we're on the fourth one ;-)

We'll post a pic w/updates when this block is complete!

UPDATE: 3 hours, 23 min. later...the Eagle block is finished!

The Eagle block - finished!
And didn't it turn out Amazing?!

Also got another QOV ready to quilt and will begin quilting as soon as we finish up our embroidery blocks and our latest bout of 'surprise' thunderstorms blow through:

QOV Stars Group - Quilt of Valor
Our East Central IL QOV Group was chosen to receive this QOV quilt top.  We offered to quilt it, and added the two exterior borders to accommodate the BIGGER than life Vet it is destined to be awarded to.

Thanks goes to Carol of the QOV Stars Group for ALL she and her incredible volunteers have done and continue to do, to honor and cover our Service Members and Veterans with Quilts of Valor.

New QOV Eagle Panel Challenge Begins!

Just received this gorgeous Northcott Eagle Panel from Carol of the QOV Stars Group:

Let the Quilts of Valor Panel Challenge Begin!

So far, pulled several coordinating Northcott fabrics and a few other patriotic fabrics - ALL from my own personal stash, looks like I won't need to purchase another thing!  They all seem to be playing together nicely, too ;-).

Giving serious consideration to adding some embroidered blocks to this Quilt of Valor, which could be awarded to a Vietnam Veteran pilot, who is also a Purple Heart recipient - will have to do some checking w/Carol to see IF this could be an option.

Our East Central IL QOV group awarded a similar Quilt of Valor, the Flight of the Eagle, to my cousin, who was a Vietnam Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.  As a result of that QOV Award, we recently received this Quilt of Valor nomination.

Time to select just the right eagle embroideries and bordering fabrics.  Will post updates of the progress...Stay tuned!
