July Sew-IN Meeting and a very special Quilt of Valor Award

July Sew-IN Meeting brought LOTS of QOV quilt tops and a very special Quilt of Valor Award for an even more special Veteran:

IRAQI Veteran awarded his Quilt of Valor with family in attendance
It was a true privilege to be a part of helping to create this very special Quilt of Valor.  Thank YOU to Casey for his sacrifice and service for our country.  Additional info about the creation of this Quilt of Valor may be found by following this direct web link: http://donebybettyboop.blogspot.com/2015/07/another-very-special-qov-coming-off.html

One of our very favorite QOVF Volunteers, a definitive reason we continue to produce one-of-a-kind Quilts of Valor, and one of our closely guarded secrets until now...meet Doris.  We taught Doris how to create Quilts of Valor last September, 2014 at one of our very first East Central IL QOV Sew-INs. Since then, as of July 13, 2015, Doris has created 39 Quilts of Valor quilt tops and counting!

Meet Doris: One of East Central IL QOV 'Secret Weapons'
We LOVE Doris and anyone who looks or acts like her ;-)  As a reward for her unwavering Quilts of Valor efforts, we took Doris shopping at Lori's Pins and Needles.  Of course, she picked out more beautiful fabrics to create even more Quilts of Valor quilt tops.  Thank YOU, Doris - you are truly very special, indeed!

In addition to Doris's eight (8) QOV quilt tops, we received three others we are making final border decisions for.  Here are a couple we are currently working with while we wait for additional fabrics to arrive:

This QOV quilt top will get two additional borders to ensure it is the correct finished size

And this gorgeous QOV quilt top will receive three additional borders

Thank You to QOVF Volunteer, Sue for her Quilts of Valor efforts, they are much appreciated.

1st July QOV - Denim W/Gold Quilt of Valor getting quilted...

This neat Denim & Gold Quilt of Valor getting quilted just in time for the 4th:

1st July Quilt of Valor - Denim w/Gold
You may notice my photo is a bit skewed, that's because I quilted 'over' my little finger on the last pass of this neat Quilt of Valor:

Quilted/punctured pinky - see the two holes, one where the needle entered,
the other on the backside where it exited
Dang if that didn't hurt!  And my quilting machine, to Miss Betty's credit, didn't miss a lick - didn't even break the needle and/or thread...soooo, after the bleeding stopped we went back to quilting:

Denim gold/Yellowston So Fine McTavish quilted in the denim border - love the look of this!
We even decided to implement an Angela Walters' quilting technique in the 'Pledge of Allegiance' inner border and we think it looks pretty nifty:

Angela Walters' toothpick quilting in Pledge of Allegiance border
We chose to keep ours in scale with the lines of the Pledge, just to keep it simple and not too busy. Looks like it was a good choice ;-).

Just a couple more borders left to toothpick quilt and this first Quilt of Valor for July will be finished!

UPDATE July 5, 2015:  this Quilt of Valor coming off the frame http://donebybettyboop.blogspot.com/2015/07/denim-gold-quilt-of-valor-coming-off.html
