Memorial Day
From Executive Director, Susan Gordon

To Our Quilts of Valor Volunteers:

Next week, we celebrate Memorial Day-a day that holds a special place for those who love this country.  I am always amazed that men and women have given their lives over the years for me-someone they would never know. Those men and women lived and died so that America could thrive, and that the principles that created this country could endure.

To many, Memorial Day means the start of summer-fun and family.  Let's all take time this year to remember those who gave us these summers of fun and family.  Let's remember to honor their sacrifice.

Do you know about the "National Moment of Remembrance Act?"

To ensure the sacrifices of America's fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the President signed into law the "National Moment of Remembrance Act."  The Act asks that we pause for a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day to remember those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Here are a few facts I learned about Memorial Day:
  • Memorial Day, formally known as Decoration Day, originated after the American Civil War to honor both the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war.
  • The holiday was expanded after World War I to include all American soldiers.
  • This day is not to be confused with Veterans Day which celebrates the service of all United States military veterans.

Join me at 3:00 p.m. on May 25th to take a moment to remember those we never knew, but who gave their lives for us.

And, as you create heirloom Quilts of Valor for those touched by war, consider dedicating some quilts to honor the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.  Although we may never know the depths of their service or the loss of their brothers-in-arms, we owe them a debt that can never be repaid, but can be honored.

Thank you for all you do for our veterans and service members.

Susan Gordon,
Executive Director
