Sharing our 2015 Goals & Wish List and a very Special Quilt of Valor® w/Updates...

A New Year brings NEW Goals and even wishes for most, doesn't it?  East Central IL QOV is no exception, and is sharing our 2014 accomplishments along with our 2015 Goals, including our most ardent Wishes:

East Central IL QOV 2015 Goals & Wishes
We're sending out over two hundred of these exclusive letters to those in our area we feel will be most interested in sharing in one of our New Year's Goals - to cover at least 100 area Service Members and Veterans with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor® in the East Central Illinois area:

160+ ready to go out in the 'second wave'
Will you or your fine organization be one of those we've chosen to share our 2015 journey with? You'll know soon enough!

In the meantime - we have LOTS of Quilts of Valor® ready and waiting to be quilted!  Here's just one of those very special QOV quilts in the middle of the quilting process.  Each Quilt of Valor is very special and this one is no exception.  This QOV quilt top comes to us via a Brand-NEW East Central IL QOV Member, Cynthia, who is participating in a National QOV MODA fabric Competition, and this Quilt of Valor® will soon be entered amongst some of the very best across our great country:

Patriotic Stars complement this gorgeous Quilt of Valor®
The quilt top creator, Cynthia, took special care with EVERY cut of these stunning MODA fabrics
Not only has the quilt top creator of this amazing Quilt of Valor® spent countless hours just 'fussy cutting' out these incredible MODA quilt fabrics, but very special care has been taken with every stitch to sew these fabrics together as perfectly as possible.  Additionally, more than 20 hours will be spent custom quilting this rare Quilt of Valor beauty.  Then more detail work to finish this special QOV with binding and the final labor of love...the exclusive Quilt of Valor® label.

Please stay tuned for updates on our progress over the next couple of days.

Borders, BORDERS...Oh My!

Been on a Border Marathon during our recent arctic weather - adding borders to ALL those quilt tops our East Central IL Volunteer Members dropped off last week:

Multiple borders cut, ready to piece and add to several quilt tops - soon to be QOVs
Time to sew!

Adding the final third border to this really neat Patriotic Bar quilt
Time to admire ALL those wonderful patriotic borders:

This was already a really striking quilt top - the borders just made it POP!
What a wonderful TEAM effort - Doris created a really neat Patriotic Bar top and our borders finished it off nicely, don't you agree?

Flags & Stars frame out this neat Patriotic Bar QOV nicely
Another finished QOV top:

Three borders frame another stunning QOV quilt top
Some of the same border fabrics were used in this top w/very different results:

How wonderful this turned out - Great job, Doris, Love those stars!
And look what just arrived - a beautiful Quilt of Valor quilt top that will soon be entered into a MODA Quilt of Valor contest once yours truly gets it quilted.  Then, once competition and judging are complete in late March, 2015, it will be generously donated to our East Central IL QOV Group to be awarded to a very special QOV Award recipient AFTER it is entered into yet 'another' quilt competition ;-)  What a well traveled Quilt of Valor this one will soon be!

Thank goodness Miss Betty is FINALLY back on her quilting feet and ready to start her quilting engine...Let the quilting Begin!

East Central IL QOV February Sew-IN Highlights

February, 2015 Minutes
Happy Valentines!
13 QOV quilt tops complete, ready for borders & binding, ONLY 17 remaining!
Six QOVs scheduled to be awarded in February

What a February Sew-In Meeting we had!  If you weren't there then you missed it!  First, our energizer bunny, Doris brought it - SIX (6) Quilts of Valor, in fact...

This is what a stack of SIX (6) QOV quilt tops looks like
We've decided that Doris will now be referred to as our 'Strip Quilting Diva' ;-)  IF my numbers are correct, this Diva has created a Baker's Dozen (13) QOV tops since October!  Thank YOU, Doris!

Seven total in this photo - five are folded in the background
Just since National Sew Day, the QOV tops just keep coming!

National Sew Day completions we brought for 'Show & Share'
Valued Member, Jackie - shared a story about another Quilt of Valor that will be getting donated to us AFTER it is submitted in a QOV contest by MODA for judging, once yours truly gets it quilted! We should receive the top next week - we'll keep you posted in upcoming blog postings.

And our Brand-NEW East Central IL QOV Mascot made his debut:

He'll be in charge of QOVF Volunteer Memberships, haven't named him yet - Names?

We established our Brand-New Block & Top Program that will take NEW Members and beginning quilters through our Standards of Excellence quilting procedures:

QOV quilt block kits

QOV quilt top kits
We also discussed last year's fundraising efforts - where we ended, where we are now, and what we most need to focus on.  Our year-end totals were shared, including Quilts of Valor nominations and awards.  Much of this information has been posted in the Files section of our East Central IL QOV Facebook Group.

Later, decided to stop by Lori's Pins 'n Needles in Paris and check on our donation box they so generously allowed us to display, and just see IF we had enough to help get a bolt of white muslin to help out with our strip pieced Quilts of Valor:

Looks pretty good!
Once we added to the current donations, we were able to purchase a much needed bolt...Thanks, Lori! For now, time to start adding more borders to ALL those QOV's of Doris's and get busy quilting ;-)

Thank You to EVERYONE for all your hard work and efforts - what an amazing bunch you all are!!

East Central IL National QOV Sew Day yields nice results!

Saturday, February 7, 2015 was the second annual National Quilts of Valor Sew Day, and our East Central IL QOV Group registered to participate - committing to sit down and sew on that day to create comforting and healing Quilts of Valor to honor and comfort our area Service Members and Veterans.

First to be completed, a Patriotic Flag Quilt to have it's final navy star borders added:

Next, Patriotic strip quilt comes off the frame:

And the final outcome:

3 borders added to a Patriotic 'scrappy' Quilt of Valor

This quilt came to us through Clairellen of those Quirky Quilters in Michigan - Irene P. created the interior out of simply unique patriotic fabrics:

...and we will quilt, bind and ship back to Irene to be labeled for its final award to a very special Veteran...a BIG Thank YOU to Irene for letting us have 'A Ball' with this really neat Quilt of Valor quilt top, and especially to Clairellen, our Dear Friend ;-).

Another Patriotic mod strip quilt completed, ready for borders:

Second Patriotic 'Mod" quilt top created this week, ALL ready for borders!

And one of our faves, a Red/White Signature Log cabin - we have two of these and this is the second one we saved to complete for QOV National Sew Day:

Navy stars & swag borders added to this Red/White Log Cabin Signature quilt
Unique embroideries will be added to the four corner stones of this Quilt of Valor, once those final determinations have been made.

We have multiple string/strip and signature blocks created as well, that will be incorporated into various QOVs throughout the year.  We also completed two other strip quilts w/borders, one is being loaded onto the quilt frame later today:

One of the next QOVs for 'Miss Betty'
Thanks goes out to EVERYONE who helped make our East Central IL QOV National Sew Day a wonderful success!

Strip Piecing a Quilt of Valor - Betcha can't make 'Just ONE!'

Just in time for National Sew Day - a quick tutorial on how to strip piece a colorful Quilt of Valor.

Start out with a minimum of 30 - 42 patriotic 2 1/2" x WOF strips:

Two stacks of 20 strips
Unbundle and start sewing end to end on the bias:

After a while of 'strip piecing' all these strips, they start adding up:

Once ALL the strips are sewn end-to-end, time to snip the units apart and trim the seam allowances:

Strips sewn together, ready to be trimmed
Trim seam to 1/4"

Don't forget to trim those 'dog ears'

All trimmed and ready for pressing
And just look at this nice BIG pile of strips pressed and ready to be sewn together:

ALL Patriotic strips sewn together, seams trimmed & pressed
Don't forget to whack off about 18" off that first piece prior to sewing:

Find out what to do next by watching this neat video:

Sew Lady Sew!
UPDATE 2/4/2015:

Sewing the strips together
All finished - ready for borders!

These Patriotic Strip Quilts are Fast, FUN, and turn out Fantastic each and every time!  The only problem - , they're so much FUN to make, betcha can't make 'just ONE' ;-)  Just ask Doris - we've lost count how many she's made AND... she's STILL making them!!  Way To Go, Doris!!!

Grab yourself some colorful Patriotic fabric strips and get busy sewing for our Veterans...you'll be glad you did!
