Paper-Pieced Patriotic String Blocks - what FUN! w/Updates

What do you get when you mix patriotic fabrics:

Just received this box of Patriotic fabrics - great for string quilts!
Mixed w/phone book pages:

One medium-sized phone book
Take out as many pages as you need to make quilt blocks and fold to make square:

Fold one side to the other to create a square
Trim off the excess and toss or put away for another project:

Trim off excess w/paper scissors
Unfold and use the center crease to line up your first strip for sewing:

Use center crease as a guide for first strip -
I usually 'center' that first strip over it but, lining up the edge of your first strip works!
Don't forget to increase your Stitches Per Inch (SPI) to around 15 - 20 SPI, to make it easier to remove the phone book paper when you are finished stitching your blocks:

Stitch length set at 15 - 20 SPI
Ready to stitch!
Strip piecing that first strip
I like to strip piece anything whenever I have the chance - IF you will be using the same center strip THEN this is a great place to strip piece that first piece and cover ALL your blocks at the same time. I've chosen a white center strip so 'we' can also use this block as a Signature block for incorporating into Quilts of Valor - works great!  The white stripes also come together in the center and create a secondary design once all the patriotic string/strip quilt blocks are joined - easy/peasy ;-)

Center strips in place - sewn on BOTH sides prior to attaching second/third/fourth strips
Time for the next strip:

Attaching second strip
And look how neat this first block turned out

First Patriotic Strip pieced block - how neat is that?
One last thing, be sure and cover any corners that are larger than 1/4"

1/4" or more of exposure on any corner needs covered w/fabric strip
All stitched and ready for pressing

Stitched, finger pressed and ready for phone book paper to be removed prior to final pressing
Paper piecing tips, staying organized:

Keep strips accessible and all together
along w/ phone book pages
Keep things neat and tidy while sewing/trimming:

Strip trimmings - some may be used for covering corners of blocks,
others can be used to sew together into other pieced blocks for other quilts
And before you know it, you'll have some finished blocks:

Completed blocks - ready for assembly
These are the blocks we will be using for our 2015 and NOW 2016, 2017 and Beyond+ East Central IL QOV Block Drive - please use Red/White/Blue/Gold fabrics for your strips, ANY size, your choice ;-)

If You would like to join us in creating Patriotic String Blocks, Please send your completed blocks to:
