From Susan Gordon:
Introducing the Quilts of Valor® Foundation "Moving Forward" Series-#1

This is the first of a series of e-blasts to everyone on our mail list (all 7,000 of you!) to share exciting news of plans for QOVF in 2015 and beyond.

Late last year, our Board of Directors asked me to create a team to formalize our Core Values and lay out plans that would take QOVF into our second decade and beyond. The team, after months of work behind the scenes, rolled out what we had developed to over 150 volunteers from all over the country.

That first audience included local group members, group leaders, single sewers, longarmers, State Coordinators, Executive Staff Members, and Board of Directors members (including Founder Catherine Roberts), all of them volunteers like you, who attended the August Leadership Conferences in Tennessee and Nevada.

As most of you know, in the eleven years since Catherine first dreamed of covering the wounded with quilts, we have awarded over 106,000 Quilts of Valor. QOVF has grown remarkably, and with that remarkable growth comes the necessity to define not only our Core Values, but our foundation's standards, policies, and procedures.

In this year's April issue of QOVF Threads, we published the list of Core Values approved by our Board of Directors earlier in the year, but it never hurts to review them. They are:

Treating people with respect.
We honor all faiths and beliefs, striving for inclusivity.

Promoting excellence.
We put the best possible workmanship and materials into every quilt we make so it will be a lasting award for the person it is meant to comfort.

Valuing service over self.
Quilts of Valor recipients come first.

Being Accountable.
We are accountable for our actions to our recipients, our supporters, our donors, and our fellow volunteers.

As mentioned above, I'm working on a series of messages to you about the present and future of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, so you'll be hearing a lot from me over the next couple of weeks. Next, I'll be sharing the moving presentation about our Mission Statement and Core Values made by Assistant Executive Director Sharon Ledbetter during this summer's conferences.

Watch for my next e-blast and, as always, thanks for your support, and please keep an open mind. It's human nature to resist change, but sometimes changes are needed. I think you will be pleased with what is planned.

Best regards,

R. Susan Gordon
