QOV Hearth & Home Block Marathon on Earth Day! w/Updates...

Made a fairly good dent in some of the fabrics that were reserved to create several Hearth & Home blocks to fulfill our Illinois commitment for the National Quilts of Valor 2014 block drive:

Hearth & Home Block all ready to be sewn together
More fabrics in Reds/Golds/Blues w/Cream, ready to be put together:

The cutting is all finished...let the sewing begin!

Chain stitching the half-square triangles:
Sewing the 1/4" seam allowance on each side of that drawn center diagonal line
LOTS of half-square triangles ready to be cut in two
Cutting through the center on the drawn line to create two half-square triangles

The Reds and Golds are cut, just need to finish up the Blues...

Cut, pressed open and ready to have those 'dog ears' trimmed off

Dog ears creating quite a pile after being trimmed
Looks like I'll have lots of 'dog ears' for my quilt jelly jar - it's almost FULL!

Time to get back to trimming so I can get ALL these Hearth & Home blocks assembled...

UPDATE 4/23/2014:  Pieced more Hearth & Home blocks together:

Sewing pieced strips together - like to pin those nested seams down to ensure they stay lined up.
3 Red/Blue/Gold w/Cream completed...just 23 more to go!

My personal commitment to our National Quilts of Valor Hearth & Home Block Drive is 26 blocks, and I'm counting on the rest of Illinois joining me and matching that, giving us a total of 52 blocks!

Catch up w/you later w/updates and more pics of completed blocks

Borders and Bindings for QOVs...

With ALL the glorious Spring storms going on in our area the past few days, decided to add some borders to several Quilts of Valor so they'll be all ready to quilt once the weather clears up.  Here are a few pics of my recent border marathon:

Flags, stars, and fireworks border added to this gorgeous Star quilt

Blue swirl red/white/blue star border added to this 13 colonies quilt

Old Glory blue border added to this stunning Star quilt top
Red & white star border added to this amazing star quilt top

Red border added to this Carpenter's Star quilt top

And, created the binding for ALL these Quilts of Valor while making the borders:

Binding for ALL 6 QOVs and a few other surprises ;-)
For now, I have a few more presentation cases to finish up so I'll be ready for quilting once this wave of storms passes - hopefully over the next few days!

Stay safe,

Putting Together a Special Quilt of Valor, creating borders for another...

Finished piecing a special Quilt of Valor quilt top that will be delivered next week:

Liberty Quilt of Valor quilt top - ready to be quilted
Got some borders pieced together for another wonderful Quilt of Valor that will soon be presented to a very deserving Veteran:

Drawing the miter line to piece the borders, then pinning in place

Piecing the borders together w/mitered seams
Here's an example of how I trim my mitered borders using my rotary cutter and ruler w/1/4" seam markings:

Mitered seams trimmed down to a 1/4" - ready to be pressed and attached to quilt top

And now I'm off to make some more of those Hearth & Home QOV blocks - having lots of FUN creating these.  Once I decide how I'm going to embroider the centers, I'll post some pics!
